1960's proof set information

US proof sets went through a decade of change during the 1960's. The Franklin Half dollar was replaced with the Kennedy half dollar in 1964. The final year for 90% silver coinage was 1964. In 1965, the quarter and dime were minted in clad. The Kennedy half dollar retained a 40% silver content through 1970. Proof sets were not produced during 1965, 1966, and 1967. During those years, the mint produced "special mint sets" which were struck in higher quality than the coins made for circulation. Proof sets resumed in 1968.
